Maud Madsen

Maud Madsen’s paintings explore the fluid nature of memory, using the human body as a vessel for personal myth-making. Drawing from her upbringing in a 200-year-old Pennsylvania farmhouse, Madsen reconstructs moments of childhood freedom that are often colored by the sudden, adolescent awareness of being watched. Her figures, which she describes as adults inhabiting outgrown spaces, navigate environments of “tension and leisure” rendered with a mastery of anatomy and light. By blending specific details of her past with universal experiences of growth and performance, she creates atmospheric scenes where nostalgia is replaced by a vivid, sometimes uneasy, presence. Her work serves as a reconstruction of the self, balancing the technical precision of her training with the unreliable, slippery nature of recollection.
