David van Dartel’s long-term photographic project about friendship, freedom, and nature on the small Dutch island of Vlieland. Since his youth, he has been drawn to the island’s isolated, almost wild landscape, using it as a backdrop to explore intimacy within his close circle of friends. Over the course of a decade, he has documented how their shared time—swimming, wandering, drinking, and talking—creates a temporary escape from everyday life across the sea. The project reflects on how their way of living intersects with the natural environment, turning Vlieland into a space for contemplation, connection, and the projection of personal dreams.
